Parenting with Purpose

Parenting Through Challenges: My Journey

Parenting is a deeply transformative experience, but raising Kai—my son with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)—has redefined what it means to be a father. There were days when I felt completely lost, overwhelmed by the meltdowns, judgment from others, and my own shortcomings. Yet, through these struggles, I discovered resilience, unconditional love, and the profound importance of connection.

"Parenting isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about showing up every day with love, patience, and the willingness to grow alongside your child."

Lessons I’ve Learned as a Father

  • Focus on the Relationship, Not Just the Behavior

When Kai was younger, I thought discipline was the solution to every problem. I believed I could “fix” the behaviors that society deemed inappropriate. But I quickly realized that focusing on behavior alone caused more harm than good.

Everything changed when I started prioritizing my relationship with him. Instead of reacting to his meltdowns or struggles with frustration, I began to ask myself: What does Kai need from me in this moment? How can I be his safe place?

“I became more than a father—I became Kai’s mentor, coach, advocate, and friend. When I shifted my focus to our bond, the behavior often improved on its own.”

  • Patience Isn’t Just a Virtue; It’s a Lifeline

Some days felt impossible. A simple task, like brushing teeth or sitting still, could spiral into a meltdown. In those moments, it was easy to feel defeated or angry. But I learned that Kai’s struggles weren’t a reflection of defiance—they were part of his Autism.

“Patience became my lifeline. It taught me to slow down, to breathe, and to meet Kai where he was instead of where I thought he should be.”

  • Celebrate Every Small Win

Progress isn’t always obvious, and milestones don’t come easily. But when they do, they are worth celebrating. Whether it was Kai learning to navigate public transport, cook a meal, or even handle a challenging situation without a meltdown, each achievement was a victory for both of us.

“These small wins became the foundation of Kai’s confidence and independence—and they reminded me that every step forward, no matter how small, matters.”

  • Affirmation Builds Connection and Trust

Every night before bed, Kai and I have a ritual. I tell him:
“I love you, as wide as the sky, as deep as the ocean, as strong as the mountain, as blind as the bat.”

That last line? Kai came up with it. When I asked him why, he said, “Because bats can find each other in the dark. That’s like our love. We’ll always find each other, even when it’s dark.”

“That moment stayed with me. It showed me the depth of Kai’s emotional understanding and reminded me that love truly transcends everything.”

What Raising Kai Has Taught Me About Autism

When Kai was diagnosed with Autism at age three, I didn’t know what to expect. I had so many questions and so few answers. Over the years, I’ve learned that Autism is not a limitation but a unique lens through which my son experiences the world.

Key Insights About Autism

  1. Structure and Routine Are Essential
For Kai, predictability equals security. Having a consistent daily routine helped reduce his anxiety and gave him a sense of control over his environment.

“Creating structure wasn’t just about keeping things orderly; it was about helping Kai feel safe in a world that often felt overwhelming to him.”

  2. Sensory Sensitivities Are Real
Whether it was the texture of clothing, the noise of a crowded space, or even the feeling of humidity, Kai’s sensory sensitivities often led to meltdowns. I used to think he was just being difficult, but I now understand how deeply these experiences affected him.

“Learning to accommodate Kai’s sensory needs wasn’t about spoiling him—it was about honoring his reality and helping him thrive.”

  3. Advocacy Is a Lifelong Commitment
Navigating school systems, social situations, and even public spaces often felt like fighting an uphill battle. But I learned that my role as Kai’s father meant standing up for him, ensuring that his unique needs were understood and respected.

“Advocacy isn’t a one-time act; it’s a lifelong commitment. And it’s one of the most important roles I’ve ever taken on.”

  4. Autism Brings Unique Strengths
Kai’s Autism has also brought incredible gifts. His attention to detail, his unique perspective on the world, and his unwavering honesty have taught me to see life in a new way.

“Kai’s differences don’t define him—they enrich him. And they’ve enriched me, too.”
